What Is a Disabled Person Parking Permit?

A disabled person parking permit allows individuals with disabilities to park in designated spaces close to building entrances, making mobility easier and safer. In Florida, these permits are issued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and are regulated under Section 320.0848 of the Florida Statutes.

Florida offers two types of disabled parking permits based on the duration of the disability. Read more.

Permanent Disabled Parking Permit

  • Issued to individuals with long-term mobility impairments
  • Valid for four years, expiring on the holder’s birthday
  • There is no fee for a permanent permit
  • Must be renewed every four years with a new medical certification

Temporary Disabled Parking Permit

  • For individuals with short-term mobility limitations (e.g., post-surgery recovery)

Who Is Eligible for a Handicap Parking Permit?

To qualify for a disabled parking permit in Florida, you must have a certified medical condition that significantly affects mobility. Some qualifying conditions include:

  • Inability to walk 200 feet without stopping to rest
  • Limited mobility due to conditions such as arthritis, neurological disorders, or orthopedic impairments
  • Severe respiratory issues that limit breathing capacity
  • Use of assistive devices such as crutches, canes, walkers, prosthetics, or wheelchairs
  • Cardiac conditions classified as Class III or IV by the American Heart Association
  • Legal blindness (for parking privileges only)

A licensed medical professional (such as a physician, podiatrist, chiropractor, or optometrist) must certify your disability on the application. If you’re confused about the process, Auto Tags & Titles of South Florida can help.
